Simulation Scenario Writing

Enhance engagement and learning in your simulation scenarios! 

Participants will develop improved understanding, attitude and skills for best practices in scenario design, creating a narrative, and dramatic techniques for enhancing clinical teaching and learning. Participants will examine how these concepts and exercises can add to their simulations and enhance students’ understanding of the content being taught. During the course, participants will develop their own simulation scenario, with plenty of opportunities for feedback from peers and faculty.

This course can be used to obtain Simulation Canada’s Keystones of Healthcare Simulation Certificate.

Who will benefit?

Individuals from all health and human service professions, whether new to simulation or experienced, who wish to learn how to develop effective and engaging scenario design.

What will I learn?

This workshop is built on principles from story-writing and the dramatic arts, practically applied to the health and human service context.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to: 

  • List the essential components of an effective scenario;
  • Apply the Simulation Canada (SIM-one) community-developed template for scenario design; and 
  • Integrate scenario development techniques from multiple fields, such as narrative writing and theatre, to create engaging scenarios and characters.

  • Character Development: Building characters with realistic roles, dimensions, motivations, and actions.

  • Revision & documentation: Editing, piloting, editing, and documenting the scenario for future use.
