Profile in Simulation: Yvonne Galbraith
Yvonne combines her love of nursing with her love of art in her role as a Simulation Technologist at the Georgian College School of Health and Wellness. She creates realistic scenarios for critical care nurses, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Practical Nursing students to tackle in the simulation lab. Yvonne is currently working with a research team, exploring how nursing students can create duct-tape manikins for clinical skills practice and assessment. She presented a workshop on constructing the study buddy at the 2013 International Simulation in Healthcare conference.
Yvonne’s passion for art led her to complete a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art through a collaborative program at Georgian while working as a nurse and teaching at the college part-time. She has exhibited her art internationally, including Spain and Chicago, with a focus on hands and healing. She has also co-written a children’s book with her son. Yvonne is involved in a community project to help raise funds to build a well at a malaria clinic in Tanzania, Africa. She also engages in simulation work through SIM-one, a non-profit organization that advocates for and advances simulated learning in healthcare education to improve patient care and safety.
Her favourite Georgian moment was in the early 1990s when nursing students kidnapped the manikin she used for teaching and left her notes about where she could find it.
SIM-one—Ontario Simulation Network—is a not-for-profit organization that connects the simulation community, facilities, resources and services across the Province of Ontario. SIM-one advocates for and advances simulated learning in health professions education for the benefit of patient care and patient safety. Fully supported by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC), SIM-one’s vision is to further position Ontario as the global leader in healthcare simulation.
